Understanding your own communication style is crucial to recognizing how others perceive your messages and making improvements. The NEXT for Women community consists primarily of Gen X and Gen Yers. Begin by identifying yourself with one of the following groups:
Gen X – born 1965-1981 :
Gen Xers are born between Boomers and Gen Yers. They easily relate to both groups and are comfortable communicating with either generation. This group prefers face-to-face interaction, but are adept communicators in other forms.
Gen Y – born 1982-2000 :
Also known as millennials, they are unique because they are the first generation to enter the workforce who grew up with the internet. They tend to desire meaningful work and want what they do to impact the world. Because they are accustomed to a closely connected global work, they expect and accept diversity.
The next post will focus on how to make sure your message is best received. Do you think these characteristics are accurate for you and your co-workers?
