The Secret Sauce

Because we get to talk to so many entrepreneurial women, we’ve gained quite a bit of insight into what makes them tick. What get’s them up in the morning, what gets them going – what get’s their goat. Through in-person events, blogs, social media and interviews, we get to know women who are really taking their careers by the reins and creating amazing, unique and successful organizations. These women have nothing in common and everything in common at the same time.

Working for yourself has its ups and downs, it’s front and back and it’s sideways! But we hang on, we give it our all and pray like hell that it all comes back around. Aside from all of the hard work, there are some key characteristics we’ve found in these ladies. Let’s chat about what we see in these women that have created success – the “secret sauce” as we like to call it.

Tenacity. Sounds obvious right? Well tenacity is not innate. It is the one thing, above all else, that keeps you going when it feels like all roads are dead ends. It is the “thing” that every single successful entrepreneur has above all else.

In Napolean Hill’s book, “Think and Grow Rich” he tells a story about a man, who if he only drilled 3 more feet, would have found oil – striking gold. He gave up, sold his land and the next guy drilled that extra 3 feet. Guess what happened next? Yep, you guessed right – he became a millionaire overnight. We can all drill 3 feet more, right? Keep pushing, even when it gets hard – don’t give up, keep drilling.

Super Powers.  All right, just joking. But have you ever looked at someone and thought, “HOW does she do it?!? She must have superpowers!” Sometimes it feels like you’ll have to have super powers in order to make everything work. What we’ve found you really need, more than superpowers, is a great team. Hire people, barter with them, trade even – but get people who are better and smarter than you to help. It’s tough to ask for, but you’ll be super ahead of the curve once you accept this. You’ll start noticing that once you start looking for help, the right people start showing up. A buddist proverb says, “When the student is ready, the teacher appears.” Even superheros need teachers – and we can all learn from our teams.

Believers on Speed Dial. Looking like we have it all figured out is a ladypreneurs M.O. – but you don’t fool us, sister. No matter who you are, we all need to have people around us that believe in us. People around you that not only cheer you on but who actually BELIEVE in what you are building. You’ll have those days when you think everything you create is utterly ridiculous and that no one is even paying attention… those are the days you will need to lean on the people who love you. Recognize when you are having a moment of weakness, call them up and ask them to remind you why you are doing this. Trust us, they will quickly remind you of the value you provide, the spark you have and the brilliance you are bringing. The key is recognizing when you need to ask for a pep talk.

Moxie. Not just a super cool term but also a super important ingredient. The women we’ve come across all have it and it’s important to recognize it. Vigor, courage, aggressiveness, nerve, skill, verve, know-how… It’s that element of confidence that we need all need to nurture in ourselves. KNOWING we can achieve what we set out to do – and act accordingly.

The secret sauce is not really a secret but more of the perfect combination – stirred into a genius idea and a tasty game plan (aka: a business plan). The first step is often the hardest, so take the tools in your tool bag (aka and and put one foot in front of the other, sister! Your business will be fluid, it will wax and wane, so make sure you are always steering the ship but also allow it to take you for a ride!
